On the morning of Sunday, April 7, 1912, the first group of men of St. John the Evangelist Church in Frederick, Maryland met for the purpose of organizing a new Council. A short time later, the required number of candidates was obtained and a petition for a charter was made to the Supreme Office by State Deputy P.C. Mueller.
Note: Some of the information on the early years of this council was obtained from John P. Bauernschub, "The Knights of Columbus: 50 Years of Columbianism in Maryland", published in 1949.
On April 28, 1912, St. John's Council No. 1622 became a reality. The First Degree was conferred by the Degree Team of Hagerstown Council (now Pangborn Council No. 1365); the Second was conferred by Baltimore Council's Degree Team; the Third by Marquette Council also of Baltimore) under the direction of State Deputy Mueller and District Deputy W. B. Morrison of Hagerstown. For this event, special trains were chartered, bringing Knights of Columbus and their families from Baltimore, MD, York and Harrisburg, PA. The official record shows that about 1200 people journeyed to Frederick to mark the chartering of this new Council.
The chartering members were: B. Frank Allnutt, Richard J. Allnutt, M, Allnutt, E.A. Baughman, Massey F. Burkhart, Rev A. J. Conlon, Micheal J. Crogen, Richard A. Cromwell, George C. Crum, Robert J. Day, Harry L. Davis, George C. Doll, Charles H. Doll, Harry G. Dorsey, Jacob Duhow, C. William Ebberts, Joseph F. Eisenhauer, Jr., Joseph E. Elkins, Jr., Jules J. Elk, M.E.A. Groshon, Edward W. Grove, Joseph L. Houff, Edward F. Harby, Edward Harsey, Jr., Carl A. Harris, Brooke Jamison, Ernest F. Kennedy, F.E. Kessler, Louis A. Lebherz, Peter B. Larkin, Arthur J, McKenny, Joseph O'Toole, Frank A. Payne, Paul J. Payne, Fabian Posey, Thomas J. Rohrback, Hugh G. Roddy, George S. Rodock, M. Russell, N. Wilson Schley, Charles N. Staley, F. K. Staley, Robert M. Staley, W. Maredith Smith, A. Wilson Schley, C. J. Slattery, Clement F. Smith, Edward J. Smith, J.C. Sanders, George F. Topper, Joseph G. Thomas, John McE. Wilson, Joseph Wisner, James S. Wilke, Charles F. Wachter, Arthur F. Young and W. Howard Young.
The first meeting of the Council was held in St. John's Hall on the evening of May 1, 1912 under the direction of State Deputy Mueller and District Deputy Morrison. George S. Rodock was the first Grand Knight of this Council, serving through 1912. The first corps of officers consisted of Grand Knight, George S. Rodock; Deputy Grand Knight, Clement F. Smith; Chancellor, George C. Doll; Warden, George F. Topper; Finanical Secretary, N. Wilson Schley; Treasurer, Louis A. Lebherz; Inside Guard, Charles Ebberts. The installation of officers took place at the same meeting. The Rev. A. J. Conlon was appointed the first Chaplain of the Council.
Shortly after the Council was organized, the Knights of Columbus of the United States unveiled the magnificient statue erected to the memory of Christopher Columbus in the City of Washington, D.C. on June 8, 1912. On this occasion, when every Council boasted of its numbers in the long parade, St. John's Council attracted special attention by the fact that it was the baby council of the Order, and with a membership of but 52, had a total of 51 in the parade.
By November 1912, the Council had a council hall on East 2nd Street.
In 1914, the Council acted as host to the Maryland State Convention. All business was transacted in the Council rooms, which were at that time on North Market Street in Frederick.
In the early days of the Council, St. John's became known as the Mother of Councils. In a short time, through the great interest manifest by the Knights in Frederick, there followed the organizing of Brute Council of Emmitsburg, St. Francis Council of Brunswick and Mt. St. Mary's College and Seminary Council. During World War II, members of the Council joined other organizations in manning the USO Center in Frederick and had the honor of being the first organization to serve.
For many years, the Council held its meetings on North Market Street, and then on East Second Street.
In 1939, the Council purchased a dwelling at 230 East Second Street for $3,500. A Federick Post article dated 1 Apr 1939 stated the council held it's first meeting in this building on Monday, March 27, 1939. The article stated that the building was remodeled to provide a spaious lodge room on the second floor, and recreation and dining room facilities on the first floor. A Frederick Post article dated 17 Jun 1939 posted an application for a Class C ON-SALE beer license on the premises by St. John's Council Home Inc.
The mortgage on this property was burned on Columbus Day, 1947, at the annual banquet held at the Francis Scott Key Hotel.

On April 28, 1962, St. John's Council No. 1622 celebrated its Golden Anniversary. During the course of this event, through the efforts of State Deputy Maurice Klein and District Deputy Francis Bush Sr., the Council officially changed its name to Bishop McNamara Council No. 1622. This was done in honor of a distinguished Catholic cleric Auxiliary Bishop John M. McNamara who served as Bishop of the Baltimore-Washington Diocese.

In 1971, the Council moved from East 2nd Street to the "old Jefferson School" building which they purchased in Jefferson, MD. It was located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Lander Road and MD Route 180. A News article dated 7 Apr 1971 shows a photo of the keys to the building being presented to Council Grand Knight Richard Owens, Br. Al Tavares President of the Home Association, and Frank Lang Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Assembly.
PGK Bob Morrow stated that they spent a lot of time reworking the basement for a council meeting place.
After the Knights moved away, this building was demolished by the new owners and replaced with a PNC Bank. More recently, the bank building was converted to a Dunkin' Coffee Shop and Donut store.
In 1980, the Council bought the former Black Elementary School from the Odd Fellows at 16 W. Seventh Street and returned to Frederick. At this 7th Street address, the council ran Bingo games, pancake breakfasts and Friday Lenten fish fries. Members installed a commercial kitchen, liquor bar and 50-seat dining room on the first floor. The bar and restaurant was open during Bingo, dances and some evenings for public sales. Except for a limited anti-chamber in the rear, the second floor was kept as large clear room for use as the council chamber for meetings, as well as for conducting public bingo games, dances and other large group activities. Note that family of some our black members had attended school here when it was still a black school.
In 1996, the Council sold the 7th Street property and ended the St. John's Home Corporation. With the help of PGK George Williams, a trustee at St. Johns Literary Institute, the Council started meeting at St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall, the Catholic High School which was located at the intersection of Butterfly Lane and MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) in Frederick, MD. The council eventually donated the $100,000 proceeds from the 7th Street buidling sale to St. John's Literary Institute. The Council stayed heavily involved in many activities at Prospect Hall. In May 1996, it initiated a Frederick City site for the monthly Food SHARE cooperative, under the leadership of Br. Jim Dowell and PGK Bob Weedon. It conducted a monthly pancake breakfast to benefit a scholarship fund for Catholic education in Frederick County. It conducted Lenten Fish Fries. It raised funds annually to support a seminarian and conducted annual tootsie roll drives for the ARC of Frederick. It conducted annual memorial Masses and a Pro-Life Christmas parties.
In 2005, a number of changes occurred. St. John's Regional Catholic (elementary) School had relocated to new property shared with the St. Katharine Drexel Parish at 8414 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD.
St. John the Evangelist Church invited the Knights and other ministries to move into the vacant classrooms of the old school building, 114 East 2nd Street, first renamed the St. John's Community Center, then later renamed the Sister Margaret Bauer Evangelization Center.
The St. John's Literary Institute announced it's plans to relocate to Buckeystown, where it became St. Johns Catholic Prep, and efforts were initiated to form a new Council at St. Katharine Drexel Parish.
These changes made it possible for Bishop McNamara Council to move back to its roots with St. John the Evangelist Church into the Sister Margaret Bauer Evangelization Center, and our Council became the principal user of "Room 10" in January 2006.
On April 1, 2009, a Spanish-speaking second council, San Juan Bosco Council No. 14726, was chartered at St. John the Evangelist Church. A Third Degree Exemplification and a council chartering ceremony was conducted in the cafeteria of the Sister Margaret Bauer Evangeliszation Center. The two councils often worked together in common tasks, such as Mother's Day Marigold distribution and parish fundraisers. They also conducted joint council activities together such as their annual Installation of Officers and Memorial Masses.

In preparation to celebrate the Centennial Anniversary in 2012 Council members, with the help of State Deputy Peter Davio and Council Grand Knight Rick Casazza, appealed to Supreme Council to reinstate the charter name St. John's Council No. 1622, completing the Council's return to the parish community of its origin. Our historic ceremonial jewels were mounted in a display case.
PAST GRAND KNIGHTS, OFFICERS AND HISTORY BY YEAR
Note for readers: It is the current practice that officers are elected before the start of their term, which now begins on July 1, but may be installed in a ceremony which occurs after the start of their term, sometimes months later. This installation is only a ceremony and they assume their officer's duties at the designated start of their term. It is obvious from old news articles that the annual period of service, also called the Fraternal Year, initially began around November of each year. Around 1930, the start of each Fraternal Year switched to July.

COUNCIL OFFICERS for 1916 - elected on September 5, 1915.
A newspaper article states that a Court of the Daughters of Isabella (DofI) was formed in Frederick on June 11, 1916. The Daughters of Isabella was initially a women's auxiliary to the Knights of Columbus. Many of their activities were conducted in the St. John's Council hall. However, mention of the DofI appears to end after 1919, to be replaced with references to the Catholic Daughters of the Americas (CDA). Based on a legal battle ending in 1921 between two separate DofI organizations over the name, the frederick DofI may have been redesignated as the CDA.

COUNCIL OFFICERS for 1930 (1/2 year) - were installed in the St. John's Council Hall on Sunday, January 5, 1930 by Pennsylvania District 31 Deputy Edgar P. Hamilton. The installation was followed by a banquet served to approximately 125 Knights. This 1930 Fraternal Year appears to have been shortened by a new election of officers held on July 7, 1930. This may be the point at which KofC fraternal years where changed to run from July to June.
