JULY 1997
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS - Our Installation of Officers, held on July 7, was a great time for all. Mass was co-celebrated by our current Chaplain Fr. Marvin Archuleta and our former Chaplain, Fr. Paul Iaia. Br. SK Romeo Gauthier, MD State Council Treasurer, and his wife Pat were our honored guests. A nice, relaxing dinner followed at the Golden Corral Restaurant. Our July 7 council meeting was cancelled.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER BR. NEAL DURSO, III, who transferred to us on Monday July 21 from a council in Mississippi. Neal and his wife attend St. Johns Church.

STATE PROGRAMS SEMINAR ATTENDED- On July 30, the annual MD state programs and membership seminar was attended by PGK William Brown, PGK Ernest Musser, Sr., GK David Satterfield, Br. Michael Smith and Br. William Schenkel.

AUGUST 1997
Council Meeting on August 4:
- Approved transfer application of Br. Joe Sheridan from Richmond, VA.
- Council conducted a 1st Degree exemplification and conferred the 1st Degree on Br. Mathew J. Barelick (our Council 1622), Br. Hugh Lutton (Lady of Mt. Carmel Council) and Br. James Mackley (Cncl 11975).
- PGK Richard O'Connor, Br. Robert Green, and Br. Wallace Warner presented with Honorary or Honorary-Life awards.
FAMILY PICNIC ON AUG 10 - Our Family Director, Br. Ernest Musser, Sr., arranged a fabulous family picnic at the Spring Lake Retreat in Middletown Valley. We had around 50 people. Kids couldn't throw hooks in fast enough to satisfy the fish, Br. Dave Pickert showed off his swimming and rescue skills when the boat was firmly grounded on the island rocks, the food was unending and great, the fellowship superb, and God graced us with perfect weather.
CONGRATULATIONS NEW SECOND DEGREE KNIGHT - BROTHER MATTHEW BARELICK who completed his Second Degree Exemplification on August 13. The degree was designated by District Deputy Bob Jack to be in honor of Rev. Mr. Paul Breczinski, our RSVP recipient and Brother Sir Knight.
?MEETING TIME CHANGE? - We are considering a change to the Council bylaws to meet at 7:30 pm instead of 8:00 pm. This would leave more social time following meetings and accommodate the growing number of knights who work earlier hours and have problems staying up late.

- Br. Tod Davis was presented with his1st Degree certificate.
- Br. Tony Giangrande was presented with his Hononary Memberschip certificate.
- Br. Tom Defibaugh was designated as "Family of the Month" for August.
- SHARE co-op distribution was on Aug 13.

SEPTEMBER 1997
Council Meeting on September 2:
- Proposed Council bylaws changes distributed by Advocate Br. Tom Defibaugh.
- Members approved motion of intent for a donation of $200 to Brute Council to assist in purchase of a wheel-chair capable car for a needy person.
Council Meeting on September 15:
- Approved new member application of Robert D. Berkebile.
- Aprroved transfer-in requests by Br. Charles Roper and Br. Robert Fischer.
- A council Renewal of Dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is planned during council meeting on Oct. 6.
- A Corporate Mass is planned for Oct 26 at St. Timothy's Church in Walkersvilee. (later cancelled)
- Members approved a change to the council bylows which increased council dues, allowed change in meeting time, and increase the single-vote spending limit.
- A pancake breakfast planned for Oct 5.

OCTOBER 1997
DEDICATION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS RENEWED - at our October 6th meeting, we renewed the dedication of our Council to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In this beautiful annual ceremony, we dedicate ourselves to continued service in his name.

- Approved re-admission application of Br. John Moberly.
- A 1st Degree exempification is scheduled for Oct 20.
- November 3 council meeting is cancelled due to Memorial Mass scheduled for Nov 7.
- Br. Bill Garner died last Sunday, October 5.
- Marie Meadows, mother of Br. Matthew Meadows, died last Friday, October 3.
Council Meeting on October 20:
- Approved membership application of Alex Mooney and Al Petto.
- Approved transfer application of Br. Rodney P. Voisine and Br. John P. Snyder.
- Our Tootsie Roll Drive has collecte $2486.07 so far.

Council Meeting on November 17:
- Approved membership applications for Bernie Litchfield Jr., Daniel Labus, Lawrence Mattivi, and Sean O'Neil.
- Apporved transfer applications for Br. Joe Bitto, Br. John Snyder, and Br. Rodney Voisine.
- Br. Neil Durso presented certificate as "Family of the Month" for September.
- Received letter from the Supreme Council approving changes to our council bylaws.
- Br. Neil Durso elected to fill a second Outside Guard position.
- Br. Gene Droneburg given his Honorary Membership certificate.
- A Youth Basketball Freethow competition is planned for Jan 18 at St. John's Prospect Hall gym.
- A St. John's Home Corporation meeting is scheduled for December 15.
WELCOME BR. CHARLES ROPER - Br. Charles transferred into our Council as a third degree knight. He works for Hughes Network Systems and is married to Susan.
CAR RAFFLE RESULTS - Our council sold over 3800 car raffle tickets this year, which means we provided over $1500 to the MD State Charity Fund. After expenses, our net will be around $1500. This great success was due to the efforts of everyone. Particular note should be taken of the great effort by PGK Ernie Musser, Sr. Also, PGK Joe Brashears took a whole week off to work at our fair booth.
TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE - Our annual tootsie roll drive for the mentally handicapped is wrapping up again. All proceeds will go to ARC of Frederick. Thanks to all those who worked on the drive, especially the coordinators, PGK Ernie Musser Sr. and Br. Mike Smith.
PANCAKE BREAKFAST on 11/2 and 12/7 - We will hold a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on the first Sunday of each month from 8 am to Noon at Prospect Hall. Mark Nov 2 and Dec 7 on your calendar. This benefits the council and the new Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund for students at Prospect Hall. Breakfast is $5/adult, $2.50/age 6-12, Free/under 6, and $20 max per family.
MEMORIAL MASS on 11/3 - In lieu of our council meeting, we will conduct our annual Memorial Mass on November 3, at 7 pm, at Prospect Hall. Family and friends are welcome to join us. Mass will be followed by a dinner at Prospect Hall prepared by Br. Dave Wilson. Please call Dave Satterfield to confirm your attendance to estimate for the meal. We will especially honor those knights of our Council who died this year, S.K. Russell Agustus Dykes, died 08/04/97 MSGR. S.K. Edward Vincent Echle, died 05/16/97 S.K. William Henry Garner, Jr., PGK, PFN, died 10/05/97 William Jarboe Grove, died 02/01/97 George L. Thomas, III, died 12/05/96 S.K. Phillip Lebaron Thomas, III, died 09/03/96 Robert Ignatius Troxell, died 11/18/96 We will also honor a knight who was missed at our last year's mass, Lewis Bradley Marman, died 04/26/96.
CONGRATULATIONS BR. DON BRASHEARS - Br. Don was awarded Honorary Life membership by the Supreme Council and Knight of Year by Bishop McNamara Council for his years of service to the Knights of Columbus. The award was made at a Mass at St. Joseph's Church on Carrolton Manor in front of his fellow parishioners and friends.

December 1, 1997 - Council Meeting:

- "Keep Christ in Christmas" Youth Poster contest was completed and posters judged. Cash awards were approved for the winners. Coordinator: Br. Julius Pellegrino.
FAMILY PRO-LIFE CHRISTMAS PARTY - Sunday, December 7, 2 pm, at Prospect Hall. Join us for some family friendship. Games for the kids. A visit from Santa Claus. Covered dish is requested. Please bring a small unwrapped newborn gift which will be donated to Birthright, Inc.
Council Meeting on December 15:
- Approved transfer request of Br. Orlando Salvatore.
- Approved $300 donation for priests retirement care program.
- Br. Matthew Meadows and PGK Bob Weedon have resigned from their current offices. A vote to fill the vacancies will be needed.
- Motion approved to buy plaques for winners of upcoming Youth Basketball Freethow competition.
- Br. Barry Panick has submitted a withdrawal request.

JANUARY 1998
January 5. 1998 - New First Degree Knight Exemplified for one council member and one Knight of another council. Congratulations Br. Dave Shumway for his First Degree Exemplification on January 5th. Degree honoree: Br. David A. Pickert.

January 11, 1998 - Christmas decorations take-down at St. John the Evangelist Church. Participants were Br. Mike Czarnecki, Br. Jim Dowell, Br. John Keepers (Cncl 11703), Br. Larry Lindner, Br. Matt Meadows, PGK Dick O'Connor, Br. Sean O'Neil, GK Dave Satterfield and Br. Joe Sheridan.
January 10, 1998 - TRIP TO BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE - A bus will depart from Prospect Hall at 7:30 am and return after the 5:30 pm Mass. We will tour St. Patrick's Church and St. Aloisous Church in the morning. We then lunch (at your cost) and tour at the Basilica , followed by a tour the Monastery of Holy Land Franciscans. We then return for 5:30 pm Mass at the Basilica. Cost: $20/person. Maximum 45 persons. Open to all.
January 18, 1998 - annual Bishop McNamara Council Basketball Free Throw Contest held at St. Johns High School of Prospect Hall, Frederick, MD, for boys and girls age 10 through 14. First place winners can compete at the KofC MD state championship competition in March.

January 20, 1998 - Council Meeting at SJPH at 7:30pm.
- GK reported on the death of Br. Mike Ryan, a former member of the council.
- Proceeds from Fall 1997 Tootsie Roll Drive, over $2500, will go to ARC of Frederick.
January 20, 1998 - Home Corporation Board of Directors Meeting. The new board of directors, elected at the annual Home Corporation members meeting in December, met on January 20th and elected their officers, Bill Kinsella - President, Le Cox - Vice President, Gene McCarthy - Treasurer, Sean O'Neil - Secretary.
January 24 - Fourth Saturday SHARE Food Co-op Site. Two people pick up share supplies in Hagerstown and bring them back to Frederick.

FEBRUARY 1998
February 2, 1998 - Council Meeting
- Br. Neil Dursao elected as Inside Guard.
- Br. Rodney Voisine designated as Family of the Month for December 1997.
- Collection of member donations is ongoing for annual RSVP program to support seminarians.
- Br. Gene McCarty elected as Outside Guard.
- PGK Ernie Musser,Sr. elected as 1st Year Trustee.
- Vote approved to cancel next meeting on February 16, 1998, a Federal holiday for Presidents Day..
February 16, 1998. New Second Degree Knights Exemplified in Hagerstown. Congratulations Brs. Sean O'Neil & Anthony Traini for their Second Degree Exemplification on February 16th. The degree was conducted in honor of Sr. Rita Tschudi, of Middletown, MD. They were accompanied by PGK Bill Brown, Br. Al Harris and GK Dave Satterfield.
Fourth Saturday SHARE Food Co-op Site on Frederick and at St. Joseph's in Buckeystown.
Certificates of Appreciation Awarded. In February 1998, Bishop McNamara Council presented to the children of Br. Dave Wilson. Angela, David, Michelle and Nicole Wilson were given the Certificates to recognize that each has provided 100 hours of service to our Council pancake breakfasts. This has not only helped us raise money for the Council, but has also provided funds to the KofC scholarship fund at St. Johns Literary Institute.
CONGRATULATIONS BR ROBERT (R.K.) LEEDHAM AND HENRY SCHEKLETON - for become third degree knights on February 27.

March 2, 1998 - Council meeting at 7:30pm.
- Br. Dave Pickert presented award as January Family of the Month.
- Vote approved to purchase a quilt for $100 and raffle it off for drawing at planned July 11 picnic. PGK Ernie Musser, Sr. will run the raffle.
March 16, 1998 - Council meeting at 7:30pm.
- GK reports that an award was given to an Eagle Scout.
- Guest speaker: MD State Council 1xt Degree Chairman gave a historical overview of 1st Degree teams.
- Sign ups requested for upcoming Preakness Ushering fundraiser.
BINGO FOR ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH - St. Joseph's Church borrowed our bingo equipment on March 22 to support their St. Patrick's festivities.

- Recruiting drive planned at St. John's for May 16-17.
- Draft budget for upcoming 1998-1999 Fraternal Year was distributed to members, will be voted on at follow on meeting.
April 11, 1998 - KofC ST. JOHNS ROUND TABLE - As members of the St. John's Round table, the following Knights decorated St. John's Church on April 11, Holy Saturday: Br. Mike Bowersox, Br. Jim Dowell, Br. Larry Lindner (St. John's round table coordinator), Br. Matt Meadows and GK Dave Satterfield. Also helping was Br. Jim Kaney from Buffalo, New York (brother-in-law of Dave Satterfield).
April 20 - Council meeting.
- A 1st Degree Exempification was conducted for three candidates, Paul Macik Jr. for Council 1622 and two for other councils. Degree honoree was the family of PGK George Williams.
- It was reported that the Home Corporation met with Merrill Lynch Co. Investments were not changed.
- Quilt raffle is still ongoing, drawing planned for July 11 picnic.
- Our District Deputy reported that the council has met requirements for the Star Council Award.
- A Knights at the Keys (baseball) is planned for Auguest 7th.
- Election of officers is planned for May 18 meeting.
April 30, 2998 - Fourth Saturday SHARE Food Co-op Site. Eighty-five shares distributed.
Our council seminarian support fund (RSVP) raised $500 which was just sent to our seminarian at Mt. St. Mary's College, Collin Poston.
THANKS TO BR. BERNIE LITCHFIELD, JR. - A master electrician by trade, Bernie has installed lights and power in the storage building behind Prospect Hall for both rooms, one room for the Knights of Columbus and one for the Prospect Hall Athletic Program.

Knights of Columbus PANCAKE BREAKFAST — Sunday May 3, 8:00am — 12 Noon, St. Johns Literary Institute at Prospect Hall, Junc MD 180 and Butterfly Lane. Includes Sausage, potatoes, and drinks. !New menu item! - Poached Egg, Ham and Sauce on English Muffin! !NEW - Children's activity table! Cost$5/adult, $2.50/age 6 to 12, Free/under 6, Max $20/family. Proceeds support council and scholarship fund at Prospect Hall. Call Dave Wilson to join the breakfast work crew - positions available. Proceeds used to raise funds for the Council and our KofC Scholarship fund.
May 4, 1998 - Council meeting,
- Council member, Br. Alex Mooney, who is running for MD State Senate seat, spoke on pro-life issues.
- 50/50 raffle conducted during meeting.
May 16, 1998 - Preakness ushering fundraiser. Sixteen Knights and family members participated for ur council.
May 18, 1998 - Council meeting.
- ELECTION OF OFFICERS - The council elected new officers on May 18th for
the fraternal year from July 1, 1998 to July 1, 1999.
- Grand Knight Dave Satterfield, PGK Bill Brown, and PGK Joe Brashers will attend MD Council Annual Convention.
- Three signed membership applications were received during the recruiting drive at St. John's.
- Br. Edgar Haynes, a PGK of our council, was elected as MD State Warden.
- District Deputy reports that a new council is being formed at St. Timothy's in Walkersville.

May 27, 1998 - Thanks Brs. Larry Lindner and John Moberly for installing window air conditioners on May 27th for Birthright of Frederick. In quick response to their request, our Brothers installed the A/C just time for the recent heat wave. Well done!
Saturday, May 30, 1998 - As in past years, Bishop McNamara Council assisted St. John's Regional School in conducting a Bingo for the school's benefit during their Spring Fair on Sunday, May 30th. Brother Bernie Litchfield, Jr. called the Bingo and was assisted by Brs. Mike Czarnecki, Ted Mucha and Dave Satterfield.

JUNE 1998
June 1, 1998 - Council meeting.
- A 1st Degree Exemplification was conducted for six candidates, two for St, Timothy's Council and four for our Bishop McNamara Council. Our council candidates were Frederick Fleitz, Daniel Schultz, David Owens, and Kenneth Saad. The degree honoree was Rev Iaia, who retired.
- The council gave awards to three graduating students at St. Johns Literary Institue at Prospect Hall (SJPH) and St. Johns Regional School (SJRS) as follows: Ms. Nicole Reifsnider (SJPH valedictorian), Mr. Christian Ruitberg (SJPH citizenship award), Mr. Joseph Palkovic (SJRS outstanding male student).
- District Deputy Bob Jack reported that St. Timothy's Council will be istituted on June 7.
- District Deputy Bob Jack reported that Bishop McNamara will be moved into District 4 on July 4 for the new Fraternal Year.
June 2, 1998 - Welcome new 1st Degree Knights who took their exemplification on June 2nd: Brs Fred Fleitz, Dave Owens, Ken Saad, and Dan Schultz. The degree was coducted in honor of Fr. Paul Iaia to commemorate his retirement after 42 years as a priest.
June 6th - All Knights are invited to the ordination of Br. Paul Breczinski at the Cathedral in Baltimore and also to his first Mass on June 7th.
June 7th - Last pancake breakfast fundraier at SJPH for the Summer. Managed by Br. Dave Wilson (head chef) and GK Dave Satterfield.
Sunday, June 7, 1998 - New council formed in Walkerville - On June 7th, St. Timothy's Council was instituted. The 1st degree exemplification was supported by Brs. Ernie Musser and Dave Satterfield from our Council's 1st degree team. Our council presented our best wishes and a start-up gift check to the new council. Their new Grand Knight is Br. SK Greg Loss. Transfers to St. Timothy's Council from Bishop McNamara Council are Robert Berkebile, Paul Hoffman, William Loftus and George Meyer. Fr. Murphy, the pastor of St. Timothy's Church, also transferred into the new council and will serve as their Chaplain.
June 14, 1998 - The MD State Convention at Ocean City 5/15-17 (Delegates GK Dave Satterfield, PGK Bill Brown) passed our Council's resolution congratulating Fr. Murphy of St. Timothy's Church in Walkersville for his 25th anniversary as a priest. The resolution was co-presented by Bishop McNamara Council and the newly instituted St. Timothy's Council at his anniversary celebration on June 14th.
June 15, 1998 - Council meeting.
- DD Martin Luchanski (member of Poplar Springs Council) was introduced as our new District 4 Deputy.
- Designated "Family of the Month", Br. Tom Gargan for May, and Br. Bernie Litchfield Jr for June.
- July 11 picnic will be potluck.
- Budget was approved as written for 1998-1999 Fraternal Year.
- Last meeting chaired by Outgoing Grand Knight Dave Satterfield.
June 21 and June 29 - Congratulations to Student Award Winners! Bishop McNamara Council had the honor of presenting awards to several graduating students at our Catholic schools. On June 21st, GK Dave Satterfield presented the MD State Citizenship Award, plaque and a cash gift to graduating senior Mr. Christian Ruitberg and a congratulatory letter and cash gift to the Valedictorian, Ms. Nicole Reifsnider, at St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall. On June 29th, we presented the "Most Outstanding Male Graduate" Award and a cash gift to Mr. Joseph M. Palkovoc of St. John's Regional School.
