JULY 1999
In the 1999-2000 Fraternal Year, Bishop McNamara Council was in MD State District 4. District 4 also included St. Michael's of Poplar Springs Council #10525, Archbishop John Carroll Council #11715 in Brunswick, and St. Ignatius of Loyola Council #11815 in Ijamsville. Our District Deputy 4 was Br. Martin Luchansky of St. Michael's Council.
July 5, 1999 Council Social Meeting - cancelled due to July 6 Installation of Officers.
July 6, 1999 - Installation of Officers conducted following a Mass by Rev Marvin Archuleta at the Chapel on Ft. Detrick, MD. Officers were installed by District 4 Deputy Martin Luchanski and District Warden William Cooney. MD State Council Treasurer Richard L. Sherbert and his wife Barbara were in attendance. Dinner followed at the Community Activities Center, Fort Detrick.

Note that new elections were held later in the year to fill sudden office vacancies, including Br. Charles T. Aaron as Deputy Grand Knight and PGK Michael Harrison as Chancellor. Reverand Robert J. Jaskot was appointed as Worthy Assistant Chaplain.
July 19, 1999 - Council Business Meeting - SJPH,7:30pm
- Application for membership for Christopher Shumway was approved. Note that Chris is the son of current member Br. David Shumway.
- Three applications for transfer into the council were approved; Fr. ???, Br. Michael Harrison, and Br. Scott T. Defibaugh. Note that Scott is the son of member Br. Thomas Defibaugh.
- GK Bill Kinsella presented PGK Richard O'Connor with his Honorary Life Membership card.
- Proposed budget was distributed to members. Grand Knight reported that the semi-annual financial audit was completed on 14 July.
- Br. Bill Houch and wife will be pro-life chairs.
- Council picnic was a success.

- SK Tom Defibaugh discusses upcoming 4th Degree Exemplification scheduled for 12 Feb 2000 and encouraged members to join the 4th degree and become color corps members.
- PGK Bill Brown reported that the 1st meeting in Otober is planned to be for members and spouces and be held at the club on Fort Detrick.
- Br. Tom Defibaugh has been appointed as Lecturer for this coming year. Encourages members to bring their rosary to meetings. He hopes to set up a family swim night at the Fr. Detrick pool with other District 4 councils.

- District Deputy reports that the MD Columbus Day parade will be in Baltimore on Sunday, Oct. 10. A Mass for Fr. McGivney will be held on Aug 18 at St. Ignatius Church in Ijamsville, MD.
- Council Director Br. Charles Aaron reports that Car Raffle booths will be set up Sep 9-11 at the FSK Mall, Sep 17-26 at the Great Frederick Fair, and Sep 25-26 at St. John the Evangelist Church.
- Community Director Br. Bernie Litchfield Jr. reports that a Key's Game event will be held on Aug 13. A SHARE team picnic will be held on Aug 28. This months SHARE oreder deadline is Aug 15.
- Br. Jim Dowell reports that the Hunger Ministry at St. John the Evangelist Church will be distributing empty bags after Masses this weekend, volunteers needed.
- A council dinner will be held on Oct 4 at Ft. Detrick with chicken lombardy or roast beef, $11 each, RSVP. Council meeting will be cancelled on Oct 4.
- Lecturer Br. Tom Defibaugh, recommends a $0.25 donation for not having a rosary in your pocket during meetings.

- A new Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapter of Grand Knights is being proposed for western MD. Current GK chapters are in Washington DC and Baltimore.
Septmber 20, 1999 - Council Business Meeting at SJPH
- Dinner planned for Oct 4 at Ft. Detrick for members and spouses.
- Neil Durso is considering resigning his office as Deputy Gand Knight.
- Annual memorial Mass will be held on Nov 15. Names of deceased family and friends requested to be placed in booklet.
- Br. Julius Pellegrino is starting preparation for annual "Keep Christ in Christmas" poster contest
- Pancake breakfast fundraiser will be conducted at SJPH on Oct 11.
- Motion passed to donate our old set of ceremonial robes to St. Timothy;s Council No. 12255 which has recently been certified with a new 1st Degree team, except the two existing gray guards robes which will be used with the new robe set.
- Honorary Life Membership card was presented to Br. Eugene McCarthy.
- PGK Richard O'Connor has been appointed to establish a Charity Committee and is looking for volunteers to participate.
- PGK Ernie Musser Sr. reported that the annual Tootsie Roll Campaign to help the mentally handicapped will begin on Saturday, Oct 9.
- Lecturer PGK Tom Defibaugh encouraged members to join the Fr. McGivney Guild.
- Car raffle volunteer schedule still have vacancies.
- Motion by PGK Tom Defibaught to purchase two white robes for 1st degree team assistants was tabled to confirm with the MD State Council that this is acceptable.
- Motion by PGK Richard O'Conner to conduct a Citris Fruit sale to raise funds for the council was passed.
- Members discussed becoming sponsoring organization for Boy Scout Troup 274. An article will be placed in the next council newsletter to raise issue to the membership.
- Br. Bill Hauche reported that a Life Chain will occur on Oct 30.
- Motion by PGK E. Allen Harris for council to be a financial sponsor to the golf tournament to be held on Oct 16 to benefit the Frederick County Mission of Mercy. Motion passed.
- 4th Degree report by SK Tom Defibaugh, there will be a 4th Degree exemplification in Feb 2000 in Ocean City, MD. Candidates being sought.

- A 2nd Degree Exemplification will be held tomorrow, 3 Nov, at 7pm in the gym at St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall (SJPH).
- Family Programs Director PGK Ernie Musser, Sr., announced that the Family of the Month for November was awarded to Br. Larry Mattivi.
- Tootsie Roll Chairman PGK Ernie Musser, Sr., announced that $3795.40 was collected for our annual Tootsie Roll Drive to help the mentally handicapped.
- Names of the two winners of the SJPH scholarships were announced by Scholarship Chairman PGK Richard O'Connor.
- Monthly pancake breakfast fundraiser will be held next Sunday, Nov 7.
- PGK Tom Defibaugh has blank applications for the Fr. McGivney Guild and encourages members to join.
- Members approved motion to donate funds to help North Carolina flood victims.
- Members approved funds to support dinner after upcomong 2nd Degree.
- A reception will be held at the Weinberg Center on Nov 19 to celebrate PGK Tom Defibaugh's retirement as a U.S. Navy Captain.

Tuesday, Nov 15, 1999 Council and Assembly Joint Memorial Mass conducted at St. John's Literary Institute at Prospect Hall (SJPH). A commemorative service was held prior to the Mass to remember recently deceased Knights; Br Richard W. Benet, SK Kenneth W. Martin, PGK, and Br Richard C. Sappington.

November 1999 - 4th Saturday SHARE D-Day
Late November 1999 - Council "Keep Christ in Christmas" poster contest coordinated by Br. Julius Pellegrino and Br. Bernard Litchfield for children, grades 1-8. Poster deadline before Thanksgiving school break. Category winners (grade 1, 2&3; 4,5&6; and 7&8) were forward to MD State Council for state-level competition.
In November 1999, Bishop McNamara Council 1622 entered into two formal sgreements with the Community Foundation of Frederick County, Inc., to establish two field-of-interest donor-advised funds. Both funds are award annual scholarships to students of Roman Catholic Education in Frederick County. The "Knights of Columbus Father Michael J. McGivney Memorial Scholarship Endowment" was initially funded by Bishop McNamara Council. The "Knights of Columbus Colonel Thomas F. George Memorial Scholarship Endowment" was initially funded by council member Br. Thomas George in memory of his father.

- February 2000 Basketball Foul Shooting contest has been cancelled.
- A social is being planned for February for KodC families and Valentine's Day. PGK Tom Defibaugh will help plan.
- Friday Lenten Fish Fries are being planned for SJPH, to be chaired by Br. Dave Wilson (kitchen) and PGK Dave Satterfield (front).
- Catholic Daughters are planning a blood drive on Martin Luther King's BD weekend in January 2000.
- Decoration of St. John the Evangelist Church for Christmas will occur on Thursday, Dec 22, 1999.
- January pancake breakfast fundraiser has been cancelled.
- Thirty-seven people attended our council Christmas party.
- Motion to share cost of a commerical refrigerator in kitchen at SJPH which could be used by the council for pancake breakfasts and Lenten fish dinners. Motion tabled while PGK Richard O'Connor investigates pricing. (see motion below).
- Motion for Council to spend up to $800 to fund 50% of a commercial refrigerator purchase.
- 50/50 meeting raffle was conducted and awarded to winner.
Monday December 20, 1999 - Annual St. John's Home Corporation Meeting for all interested members.
Dec 22, 1999 - CHRISTMAS CHURCH DECORATION - Knights of St. Johns Round Table and their families helped other St. John's parishioners decorate St. John's Church on Dec 22. KofC participants included: Mike Bowersox and his wife Jo ( Jo Bowersox is chairperson of the decorating committee) Mike Czarnecki and his wife Kim, Bill Haucke, his father Paul Haucke (Council 1146 in Rahway NJ) and his son Christopher Haucke, Br. John Keepers (Cncl 11703) and his daughter Rita, Bill Lawbaugh (Cncl 1965), Larry Lindner (St. Johns Round Table Coordinator), Matt Meadows, John Moberly, Dick O'Connor, Julius Pelligrino and his wife Celie, Dave Satterfield, Pete Sterner and George Williams.

- GK welcomes Br. Eric Phillips, who is from Texas.
- A van will leave tomorrow at 6:15p to attend a 2nd Degree Exemplification at Rosensteel Council. Four anticipated candidates are Br. Benjamin Fetting, Br. Tom Gargan, Br. Jim Kinsella, and Br. Christopher Shumway.
Future GK Chapter meetings will be 25 Jan in Westminster and 22 Feb here at SJPH.
- Volunteers needed to support a phone tree to call members.
- Br. Michael Harrison is becoming the new coordinator for our 1st Degree team due to the ongoing illness of PGK Ernest Musser, Sr.
- There will be a District 4 meeting for Grand Knights here at SJPH on 29 Jan at 8am.
- There will be a District 4 2nd Degree team practice during the first week of February, in preparation for giving a 2nd Degree on Feb 15 in Urbana.
- Discussion on fundraising opportunity to do in-stands beer concession at home Keys games. Two men pernight would be needed for 22 games. Motion expected to be made at the next meeting.
- Annual alter server recognition planned for June, ccordinator DGK Charles Aaron.
- A picnic is planned for July, coordinator Br. Bernie Litchfield.

March 6, 2000 - Council Social Meeting - SJPH, 7:30pm
- A first degree exemplification was conducted for three members St. Michaels of Poplar Springs Council. Candidates names not recorded.
- Grand Knight's Repot:
- - Council newsletter is being handled by PGK Dave Satterfeild and PGK Tom Defibaugh.
- - Friday Lenten Fish Fries in basement cafeteria at Prospect Hall (SJPH), 5pm -8pm, March 10, 17, 24, 31, April 7 and 14.
- - A council officers and program dirctors meeting will be held here in the SJPH library on March 13.
- - A 2nd Degree will be held here at SJPH on March 21.
- - The next GK Chapter meeting will be held in Middletown on March 28.

April 3, 2000 - Council Social Meeting - SJPH
- Application of transfer into the council for Br. Paul A. Haucke, father of Br. William Haucke, approved.
- A 1st Degree Exemplification was conferred on Br. Ken McDonough.
- Maryland State Warden Edgar Haynes, a past grand knight of this council, was a special guest.
- The pilgrimage by bus to the Bacilica of Immaculate Conception was a success. Thank you to Br. Bernie Litchfield, Sr. for coordinating it.
- Apr 5 will be the annual Oldtimers Dinner sponsored by the Bishop McNamara 4th Degree Assembly at the Cozy Inn in Thurmont.
- The council will be conducting a fundraiser to sale beer at the stadium for Key's home games. Coordinator: Br. Charles Aaron.
- April 15, 2pm, the Knights will sponsor the 11th station for a Live Stations of the Cross at St. John the Evangelist Church. A soup dinner will be served aftewards.
- Apr 28/30, we will conduct a recruiting drive after Masses.
- May 20, volunteers needed for Preakness Ushering fundraiser.
- Deposit will be made for holding the upcoming installation of officers at Ft. Detrick.

- - Fr. Marvin Archuleta is being transferred toNew Mexico this Novemebr 2000.
- - July 17, Installation of Officers scheduled at the Community Center at Fr. Detrick. Dinner cost $13/person. 47 have signed up so far.
- - June 27, GK Chapter meeting scheduled at St. Mary's Church in Pettersville, MD.
- - June 28, 1st Degree scheduled at St. Timothy's Church, Walkersville, MD.
- - New St. John;s Round Table Chairman needed.
- Council dance fundraiser was held on Friday, June 16th at SJPH. Coordinator Br. Rich Fairley.
- MD State Car raffle fundraiser is upcoming, coordinator Br. Joel Tootill. Planned events at St. John's on Aug 19-20, FSK Mall on 11, 12, 13 Aug, and Frederick Fair on 15-23 Sept.
- Key's Statium Beer sales, inadequate support form membership.
- Council picnic coming up on July 8 at Farmer's Woods in Petersville, MD.
- District 4 swim party planned for Aug 4, 8pm-Midnight, at the Fort Detrick pool. Sign up by July 31.
- Prayers for Joseph Meadows, who died May 29, 2000, son of Br. Matthew Meadows.
